Our Founding Fathers, whose ideas were formed during the Age of Enlightenment, provided us with many gifts of wisdom. We all know that. Their greatest gift was guiding us clear of the debacle of combining government and religion, i.e. Separation of Church and State.
Both Israel and Iran never benefited from this wisdom and as our original leaders could have easily foreseen these countries are in deep and threatening world-wide calamity involving nuclear weaponry. Bonding our destiny to Israel amounts to an acceptance of their Church State relationship. Israel’s cause, largely based on religious principles, has become our cause. Ironically, while most other nations of the world have embraced the principle of the Separation of Church and State, we sadly chose to abandon it by supporting Israel. Freedom of religion yes, but not freedom to influence and finally dictate government policy.
Neither Israel or Iran have a constitution that forbids combining religion and government, but the United States does and we need to recognize that it is still valid. We need a quick return to the principles that once made our country the greatest nation on earth.
