March of the Friedmanites
Oct 27th, 2008 | By Nick Richtman | Category: EconomicsWhen you punish people for making more money and you reward them for nothing, that is socialism. And that’s a terrible, terrible way for this country to move.

Behind the banner of free-market capitalism, they marched toward their mission. Armed with degrees in economics, management, and finance, the Friedmanite masses moved forward at a reckless pace leaving an enormous path of destruction behind them. Those that fell victim included progressive tax policies, regulation, and effective governance. When calamitous economic realities impeded their path forward, they simply detoured around them, set to remain on track without ever looking back.
Their marching orders were given twenty-eight years ago by their master, Ronald Reagan, when he declared “government is the problem, not the solution.” From that point, and with eerie adulation, they’ve marched forward on their mission of convincing the nation that their brand of the American Dream is the only one to buy. The Friedmanites understand the American Dream as a road to riches paved by unfettered capitalism which naturally will cascade wealth down to anyone willing to let it trickle upon them.
Today, economic realities have imposed impediments so large that their progress has slowed. Disparities between rich and poor, between CEO and average worker are at historically record highs. Levels of poverty are increasing at an enormous pace. Forty-six million people are without health insurance. The government’s record deficit-producing spending spree has done next to nothing to improve or even maintain the nation’s infrastructure and the welfare of its citizens.
The slowed march has forced the old brand of the American Dream to be pulled from the shelf and given a new life. Signs of its reemergence are appearing in common public discourse.
“Government cannot solve all our problems, but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves: protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education; keep our water clean and our toys safe; invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology.”
Thus, when these words were spoken by Barack Obama, suddenly the old brand of the American Dream was reborn to offer hope for the future. The old brand of the Dream is defined as: the road to prosperity is paved by helping hands of government, ensuring that all of its citizens are given the means to become successful.
The Friedmanite masses believe that if such a brand is allowed to flourish once again, the evils of socialism will be lurking around every corner.
Therefore, they consulted the wisdom of their master, found the ideological strength to regroup, and continued marching forward. They will march over anyone who attempts to sell a different brand of the American Dream. Those who do so will be called socialists or anti-American. At all costs and by any means, the ticking time bomb of socialism must be defused. For the Friedmanites cannot fathom a world where everyone is better off at the expense of those at the top being slightly less super-wealthy. This, to them, is un-American.
