Senator Max Baucus of Montana, who as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee has made health care reform his top priority, has decided to meet with single-payer health care advocates. Single-payer is a system in which the federal government acts as the nation’s sole health insurance provider and would provide every American with coverage. After rebuffing single-payer advocates for weeks and claiming that the system is off the table, the Senator has decided to meet with five members representing single-payer. The five members will push the Senator to consider two single-payer bills in congress sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative John Conyers. Thus far, the Senator has met with every other major player in America’s insurance industry.
